Jazz: The Second Century

Thursdays in August, 7:30 pm
Chapel Performance Space
Good Shepherd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave N

Jazz appears to have a bright and passionate future in Seattle.

The response to a call for submissions for our second annual Jazz: The Second Century initiative was impressive and we received many excellent projects for consideration.

From the 31 artistic samples, our jury of community members selected their favorites through a “blind jury” process. We scheduled the five groups with the highest ratings to appear in concerts on consecutive Thursday nights in August at the Chapel Performance Space in the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford.

We are excited to present this diverse group of artists in this series of concerts. Their work is forward thinking, spirited, and beautiful. The venue is comfortable, centrally located, and acoustically suited to the music. And there is plenty of free parking.

Thanks to our panel participants: Peter Monaghan, Paul Rucker, Cuong Vu, and Peter Walton. And thanks to all of the artists who rose to the challenge.

Jazz: The Second Century gives voice to the vision of Seattle’s fine jazz artists. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting series of concerts. The music is fascinating, fun, hopeful, challenging, accessible, and beautiful. What is the future of jazz?

- John Gilbreath, Executive Director

In the summer of 2006, Earshot Jazz began a comprehensive project entitled “Jazz: The Second Century,” an initiative intended to address jazz’s progressive transition into the future. This concert series seeks to bring the discussion into creative motion where it matters most - on the stage, with an attentive audience.

Earshot Jazz is a Seattle based nonprofit music, arts and service organization formed in 1984 to support jazz and increase awareness in the community.  Earshot Jazz publishes a monthly newsletter, presents creative music and educational programs, assists jazz artists, increases listenership, complements existing services and programs, and networks with the national and international jazz community.
